Player evaluations are an important step in the registration process. Please note these evaluations are NOT tryouts. They're simply used as a means to create fair and balanced teams.
They'll be all sorts of players - some experienced as well as new-comers to the game and we think that's great! At GILL, we want to give every Islander child who wishes to play baseball a place to play!
The evaluations are quite simple. A typical evaluation day:
- Upon arrival (see below for locations and times) you'll receive a number that will be placed on the player's shirt.
- The player will wait in a designated line until called by a league official. The player will then be thrown baseballs(around 5 each for normal throws, grounders, and pop-ups). One of our experienced coaches will be throwing the baseballs.
- For Minor or Major evaluations, the next step is hitting. In most cases, a coach will pitch around 5 balls to each player. International baseball does not conduct hitting evaluations.
- Duration of the evaluation will vary depending on division and the amount of players attending. As an estimate, International will last around 1.5 hrs, Minor/Major Baseball around 2-2.5 hrs, and Minor/Major Softball around 2 hrs.
League commissioners are responsible for player evaluations. If you have any questions, please contact the appropiate commissioner.

Born Lawrence Peter Berra, "Yogi" was a 3 time AL MVP and one of the best catchers the game has seen. His lifetime batting
average still ranks him high in history.
